Like many who are just now beginning to navigate the complex world of cannabinoids, terpenes, and plant-medicine, you may be wondering: what’s the difference between Hemp and CBD?
Well, we were pretty confused too, so we thought we’d lend a helping hand.
The hemp plant is pretty miraculous. Without getting into the nitty-gritty of hemp vs cannabis, we can broadly classify hemp into two different categories that we use to do very different things. The first type of hemp is industrial hemp, which people use to make clothes, rope, paper, and even plastic.
We love industrial hemp. There are so many environmentally friendly uses of industrial hemp and we believe it can play a big role in healing our planet from the catastrophes of global warming.
(In fact, it’s one of our goals for 2020 to start using 100% hemp-based paper for our packaging.)
The second type of hemp and our favorite is medicinal hemp or the hemp flower, which we grow to get the active ingredient CBD and other beneficial cannabinoids, terpenes, and plant-constituents. This part of the plant can be smoked, vaped, or made into Sky & Wyatt tea!
The heat from all these methods “activates” (it actually “decarboxylates”, but that’s for another blog post) the CBD and full spectrum cannabinoids from the plant so that when ingested, your body can readily absorb those beneficial compounds
However, we do far more with the hemp flower than just smoke it or make it into tea. Most people actually extract the active ingredient CBD to make concentrated powders, oils, tinctures, gels, and all sorts of other forms of isolate. Some of these powders or oils just extract the CBD alone. This powder or oil is then made into tinctures, pills, dog treats, and sometimes other tea! Yes, other CBD tea!
So, now that we’ve got that covered, you’re naturally wondering: what’s the difference between Hemp Tea and CBD Tea?
Hemp tea is the actual hemp flower and goes through no chemical extraction process. The high CBD hemp flower we use in Sky & Wyatt is blended into herbal tea to make an all-natural CBD product. CBD Tea, on the other hand, is made using high-energy and often chemically extracted CBD. That CBD isolate is often sprayed atop normal tea leaves to create the infused drinkable.
CBD Tea is just that: rich in CBD, and nothing else. That means you’re missing out on all of the amazing benefits of the full spectrum hemp flower. While there is nothing wrong with this process, at Sky & Wyatt we seek to maintain an all-natural, all-from-the-earth CBD product that provides all the benefits of the plant to the user without any chemical processes, ever.
So, while there may be other CBD teas on the market, be sure to read up on what’s really in the product.
Happy steepin’
